Supporting the Next Generation of Trekking Guides in Nubri
In November 2024, Himalayan Environment and Life Protection (H.E.L.P.), in partnership with the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hospitality Management (NATHM), organized two 10-day training sessions for 22 young men and women from Nubri and Tsum. Held in Samagaun, these sessions focused on porter trekking guide and local guide training.
The program was designed to provide opportunities for youth who may not have completed Class 10 or 12 but demonstrated strong English skills and enthusiasm for guiding. Through this foundational training, participants can begin working as porter trekking guides (assistant guides) and, with four years of experience, qualify for full trekking guide certification. This initiative opens meaningful employment pathways for Himalayan youth and helps reduce the need for labor migration abroad.
Motivated by the experience, 13 youth who had completed Class 10 or 12 and joined the Samagaun training were awarded scholarships to attend the official 35-day trekking guide course at NATHM’s headquarters in Kathmandu, held from December to January.
We’re thrilled to share updates from some of our graduates! Pemba, who completed the training, visited Samagaun recently and has been actively guiding during the Spring season. We also heard from Tashi and Dolkar, who are now putting their licenses to use, and from Dhorje, a graduate of the porter guide program, who has been steadily employed since the training.
We’re proud of all our alumni and wish them continued success as they build their careers in guiding!
